Fresh-Cut Trees
Important Tips
Test for Freshness: Tree branches should bend (not snap or break) when lightly bent.
Net the Tree: Netting prevents breakage when transporting the tree home.
Pre-decorating: Recut the bottom of the tree and place into a full bucket of water until you're ready to decorate; always keep the bucket full of water.
Recut the Tree: Cut 1 to 1-1/2 inches up from the bottom when you're ready to put it into the stand; be sure not to angle the cut.
Use the Right Stand: Make sure the stand is large enough to hold the tree and at least one quart of water for every inch diameter of the tree trunk. Also, make sure the tree stand fits the trunk of the tree.
Stabilize the Tree: Make sure the tree is secured and stable in the stand to prevent tipping.
Placement: Keep the tree away from any heat sources - including fireplaces, heaters, heating vents, and direct sunlight exposure - to prevent premature drying.
Watering: Always keep your tree adequately watered, especially during the first 48 hours. Additives and the temperature of the water do not affect the longevity of the tree.
Lights: Use miniature or LED lights to decorate the tree, as these lights produce a low amount of heat.
Disposal: Always recycle your tree. Never burn a dried Christmas tree in a fireplace or furnace. Check with your local municipality for recycling programs.
